After over 20 years working in the counseling field, life threw me a curve ball...
In January of 1999 my mother passed away at the early age of 51. Shortly after that I started having some medical problems, that continued to get worse. By 2002, things were getting worse and my doctors still didn't know what was wrong. Things had gotten so bad that I had to leave work on disability. Through the Grace of God, that summer I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, an autoimmune disorder called that is completely treatable by diet. With a diagnosis in hand, I still had a long road ahead of me to and it would be some time before I could return to the "traditional workforce."
Needless to say, finances were tough. I exhausted everything in savings and cashed out the pension plan. On the surface, things did not look good. But to quote Napoleon Hill…
“Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.”
When I first started getting sick, I was the Director of a Youth Shelter and my son, Alex was 7. I was a single mother. I worked long hours and was on call 24/7. But I loved what I was doing. As a therapist I was having able to have an impact in the lives of these youth who were in crisis. It was very rewarding.
But being “benched” by my illness gave me an opportunity to take a long look at my life and my future.
I had gone back to work when he was only two months old. All of his life I had been taking him child care in the morning and picking him up in the evening with just enough for dinner, homework and bed. There I was, spending all this time taking care of other people’s children while Alex was with someone else. How crazy was that?
And when my second son Luke was born in the summer of 2003 (I had gotten married during this time period), I definitely knew I was going to do things differently this time around.
I wanted to:
With these New Priorities I started down the path of being a "work from home mother" (WAHM) and home business owner. "Enjoy Life Enterprises" is the umbrella for all of my entrepreneurial endeavors.
Things have not always been easy but they have definitely been worth it!
Many times I have had to “bootstrap” my businesses, learning how to succeed when resources were limited. But seeing my children's smiles every morning and "tucking them in" every night is absolutely priceless. I wouldn't trade a day of it.t.
It is from these experiences and the things that I have learned along the way, that I approach Enjoy Life Design. I am not just a “web designer.” I am a person who has been there. I understand what it is like to try to build a successful business from the ground up.
