Barter for Services

Historically, bartering is often a necessity in societies where the money supply is deficient (sound familiar?). This was true on the American frontier where agricultural and other goods such as liquor, furs, hardware, and firearms were readily traded. Although these goods were often bartered at stores, the accounts were kept in terms of dollars. A trapper could trade furs for shot and powder at a trading post but the storekeeper entered the transaction in his books in "dollars."

One of my favorite shows as a child was Little House on the Prairie.  Life was hard on the prairie, but there was always someone there to give a hand. If a neighbor needed help "raising the barn," people pitched in to get it done.  Families brought food, children played while the men-folk worked and there was a big celebration when the work was done.  And you could always count on Mr. Olsen to "put it on the account."  In today's economy we business owners need to go back to our roots.

Marketing Materials

For the past several years, I have noticed that a lot of business owners have been cutting expenses by printing their own cards using the services of a company called VistaPrint.  Now don't get me wrong - VistaPrint is a fabulous company!  But in an effort to cut costs and/or because of the time involved, I see cards using the built-in templates rather than designed to match a company's look. And I often see cards with the free VistaPrint promo on the back.

There is a scripture - "People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”  (1 Samuel 16:7 NIV)  - and unfortunately in the world of marketing this is definitely true. Whether we like it or not, clients will make judgments about  your business based upon your promotional materials.
